A certified translation of a diploma · or certified diploma translation · is an official translation produced by a sworn court translator registered with a French Court of Appeal. It is the only form of translation accepted by the official bodies responsible for recognising a foreign diploma in France: ENIC-NARIC France, universities, Campus France, employing ministries, and professional chambers.
The translator translates the diploma and its transcripts with the utmost precision: the title of the diploma, the name of the programme, the name of the institution, honours, grades, ECTS credits, and the date awarded. They then affix an official stamp, their signature, a registration number, and bind the translation to a copy of the original.

Every country has its own grading system: out of 10 (Spain, Netherlands), out of 20 (France, Italy), out of 100 (United States, China, Russia), the American GPA out of 4.0, letter grades (A-F Anglo-Saxon, ABC European)… The sworn translator reproduces the grading exactly as it appears on the source document without converting it, together with the grading scale if it is stated.
ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credits facilitate mutual recognition between European universities. The translation reproduces them exactly (1 ECTS credit = approximately 25–30 hours of student workload). They must appear on the transcript or the diploma supplement.
The translator keeps the proper names of the institution and the holder in their official spelling (often transliterated from Cyrillic, Arabic, Chinese script, etc.), consistent with the passport. The diploma title is translated literally and, where necessary, supplemented in brackets with an explanatory note.
For diplomas issued by a country that is a signatory to the 1961 Hague Convention but outside the European Union (United States, Brazil, Mexico, Russia, Turkey, India, etc.), an apostille is generally required by ENIC-NARIC and French universities. It certifies the authenticity of the diploma and is obtained in the issuing country, before translation.
For countries that are not signatories to the Hague Convention, double legalisation may be requested: the competent ministry of the issuing country, followed by the French consulate. Some countries in Africa and the Middle East are affected.
Diplomas issued in an EU Member State are exempt from apostille. Some universities may nonetheless request verification with the national register (e.g. DiploMe in Italy, UK NARIC for the United Kingdom).
